This article reflects on how the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has affected (and may continue to affect) cultural and heritage institutions in Italy. The first section introduces the institutional framework of cultural and heritage organizations in the country, and recapitulates the main challenges that the sector faced prior to the outbreak of Covid-19. The second section explores how the pandemic has further added to the cultural, managerial, and organizational complexity of these institutions. It also makes some preliminary suggestions as to how cultural and heritage institutions may address the ongoing crisis, by nurturing a culture of praesentia both internally and with external stakeholders, and by striving to gain a more prominent role as ‘civil’ institutions.
